Legal Requirements for Marriage in Australia
If you wish to marry in Australia:
You must be 18 years of age or over;
You are required to lodge a Notice of Intended Marriage with an authorised celebrant no later than 1 month prior to your planned wedding date. This form is valid for 18 months from date of lodgement. This form is provided by celebrant or can be downloaded from Attorney-General’s Department;
Relevant proof of birth and identity documentation to be sighted by celebrant prior to marriage;
If you have been married previously you would need to produce the relevant Divorce or Death Certificate;
You must complete a Statutory Declaration prior to marriage confirming there is no legal impediment to your marriage - this is provided by celebrant.
